My father was a lifelong amateur magician and had passed his love of magic to me as a child and teenager. There were a number of classic magic books that he had treasured from his childhood in the 1930s and 1940s that were falling apart when he died two years ago. They are priceless to me and I wanted to ensure they would be restored with enormous care. I found Jeff Peachey and brought the books to him. He was responsive and patient in talking me through options for restoration, and his commitment to craft and his skill was obvious from the start. Jeff did fantastic work, at a reasonable cost, on damaged bindings, tears, and dust jackets, without altering the authentic sense of the books’ vintage. I am so pleased to have these volumes now restored so that perhaps some day they may be treasured by my own children as a legacy of their grandfather.

I have worked with Jeff Peachey for decades. He is a master binder and conservator; meticulous in his craft, fair and honest in his practice. Recently, a friend gifted me a first-edition Pop-up Pinocchio, which needed some care from the hands of a skilled pro. Jeff’s assessment of the book and its condition were spot-on, as was the quality of his repairs and his price for doing the work was extremely fair. Jeff is also a book arts scholar and an inventive maker of bookbinding tools. I always learn something interesting about books and bookbinding when I visit his studio in upper Manhattan, near the Cloisters. I would trust any of my precious books to Jeff for repair and restoration.

We have a Dutch family bible from the early 1700’s that had detached boards, numerous detached pages and numerous tears. In short it was in desperate need of help and I wasn’t optimistic much could be done for it until we found Peachey Conservation. Jeff did a fantastic job repairing the damage - reattaching the boards and detached pages and repairing the torn pages, returning the bible to a condition that will enable it to be appreciated by current and future generations with the added benefit of completing the project in less time than he thought and right on budget. Jeff even created a unique storage box/cradle that enables easier viewing of the work that will further preserve it for the future. The bottom line - Jeff exceeded all my expectations. I enthusiastically endorse Jeff without hesitation and will definitely use him again to preserve other family treasures.

Jeff Peachey is a trusted colleague and a highly qualified conservator, to whom I've referred many people in search of book conservation services. His work is informed by a deep understanding of bookbinding history, current conservation practice, and respect for historical artifacts of all kinds.

Jeff seems to me to be a treasure. He is an extremely skilled craftsman and, also, a significant scholar of the craft. He is also a very good guy. I wrote Jeff out of the blue 15 or so years ago. He responded immediately, and over the years he has bound, rebound, repaired, etc probably 20 of my books, each of which needed substantial work, and often work (say, on old paper) that was very hard to do. In every case, he succeeded in addressing the problem, worked quickly, charged reasonably--and has not only preserved these fragile books, but did so in renewed structures that enable them to be confidently, safely (for the books), and comfortably to be read. He is a gem.

In 2019 I approached Peachey Conservation seeking help with a grant-funded conservation project for the oldest Bible in my university library's special collections - a 1531 folio Bible printed by Christoph Froschauer. Jeff provided an estimate and treatment recommendation which would stabilize the Bible's condition so that it could be handled without risk of further damage AND which remained within the grant's financial parameters. The grant period crossed over into the pandemic, which hit Jeff's region early and hard and caused delays beyond his control. He provided frequent updates and was eventually able to safely return to his studio and complete the work before the grant's deadline. I am so pleased with Jeff's care and attention to both our artifact and to our budget, and I am very grateful, also, for his persistence and patience!

We've been using Jeff for many of our book conservation needs for almost a quarter century now and have always found his work to be excellent. He's a clear and concise communicator, deeply knowledgeable in his field, and does beautiful work at a reasonable price. I've recommended him to colleagues without hesitation.

In 2015, we entrusted what we considered to be one of our library's most important pieces to Peachey Conservation. With no other copy of this 1564 book in existence, we found confidence in the experiences of other rare book collections who have worked with Peachey in the past. He paid careful attention to our goals for the volume's conservation, advised us on potential options, and we agreed on a treatment plan that he carried out to our full satisfaction. He showed great skill and care in disassembling, cleaning, strengthening and reassembling the volume in a way that contributes to both its physical longevity and its aesthetic appeal. He also agreed to interrupt his own work on this piece to allow another service provider to create high-quality digital images of the entire content after he had cleaned/strengthened the paper, and before he reassembled the book block and bound it into the restored leather over wood board binding. So pleased were we with Peachey's work, that we chose to have him perform similar services for another particularly important 16th-century volume in our collection, the Mennonite Historical Library (Goshen College, Indiana). Peachey approached and completed this project with the same professional and technical skill we appreciated during the first project. Because our funding for such projects is limited, we have been grateful to know that the dollars we invested would produce the outcomes we wanted. I can heartily recommend Peachey Conservation for work that yields desired results.
